In April, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) dropped 0.7 percent from March’s level to 109, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). However, on a year-over-year basis, the index climbed 3.2 percent.

April’s Freight TSI of 107.5 declined 1 percent from March’s level, but increased 3.7 percent from April 2010’s mark. Through 2011’s first four months, freight shipments measured by the index — which were moved by for-hire rail, trucking, inland waterway, pipeline and air freight companies — rose 0.6 percent.

April’s Passenger TSI of 113.1 inched up 0.1 percent from March’s level and rose 1.9 percent from April 2010’s mark.
