In January, The Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell to 111.5, down 2.5 percent from December’s level, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). However, the index climbed 1.9 percent on a year-over-year basis.

January’s Freight TSI of 109.7 fell 3.6 percent from December’s level, ending a string of five consecutive month-over-month gains. Despite the drop, freight moved by truck, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air carriers in January reached the second-highest monthly level since July 2008, according to BTS. On a year-over-year basis, the Freight TSI rose 1.6 percent.

January’s Passenger TSI of 116.4 inched up 0.1 percent from December’s level and climbed 2.6 percent from January 2011’s mark.
