Transportation Services Index slips in September

In September, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) declined 0.6 percent from August’s level to 98.9 — the lowest September index since 2001, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also dropped 8.6 percent compared with September 2008’s TSI.
September’s Freight TSI of 95.7 decreased 0.5 percent from August’s level, the first decline after three-straight monthly increases. The index fell to its lowest September level since 1996, when the Freight TSI stood at 87.7. In addition, the index dropped 9.9 percent on a year-over-year basis.
September’s Passenger TSI of 110.3 decreased 0.8 percent from August’s level and 4.4 percent from September 2008’s level.
In the third quarter, the TSI rose 1.6 percent, Freight TSI increased 1.8 percent and Passenger TSI went up 1.2 percent.
