Transportation Services Index tumbles again in January

In January, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) of 104.8 declined 1.8 percent from December’s level, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The TSI also decreased 6.8 percent vs. January 2008’s index — the first January-over-January drop since 2007.
January’s Freight TSI of 102.7 fell 2.3 percent from December’s level, declining for the third-straight month. The index — which decreased 7.8 percent compared with January 2008’s level — also tumbled to its lowest mark in more than five years.
January’s Passenger TSI of 112.6 dropped 0.3 percent vs. December’s level and 3.8 percent vs. January 2008’s index, the first January-over-January drop since 2002.
