After a posting a gain for three-straight months, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell in June. The index totaled 111.9, a 0.4 percent decrease compared with May’s TSI, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

However, the month-over-month decline was only the second in 2006 and June’s index increased 0.4 percent compared with June 2005’s TSI. In addition, the index rose 0.8 percent in the second quarter and 1.3 percent in the first half compared with the same 2005 periods.

June’s Freight TSI of 112.6 decreased 0.5 percent compared with May but increased 0.3 percent compared with June 2005 — the smallest year-over-year gain since the index posted a decline in 2001. The Freight TSI rose 0.9 percent in the second quarter and 1.5 percent in the first half compared with the same 2005 periods.

June’s Passenger TSI of 110.0 declined 0.2 percent compared with May — the index’s second-consecutive monthly drop — but rose 0.5 percent compared with June 2005. The Passenger TSI increased 0.7 percent in the second quarter and 0.5 percent in the first half compared with the same 2005 periods.

The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
