Transportation execs talk security at Montreal summit

Last week, top railroad, trucking and marine executives met in Montreal to discuss key transportation issues, including security, infrastructure financing and modal partnerships.

Hosted by the Shipping Federation of Canada, the conference included Canadian Pacific Railway President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Ritchie; The CSL Group Inc. President Sam Hayes; Fednav Ltd. President Laurence Pathy; Montreal Port Authority President Dominic Taddeo; and Admiral Efthimios Mitropoulos, secretary general of United Nations' shipping arm International Maritime Organization.

Participants stressed the need for adequate government financing of transportation infrastructure, significant cost burdens associated with post-Sept. 11 security measures, and the absence of a coherent or coordinated government policy on transportation security.

"There is clearly a strong desire within the transportation sector to resolve these issues, and we must capitalize on that momentum to press decision makers in Ottawa and elsewhere to rethink their transportation policies in light of current realities," said Shipping Federation President Richard Le Hir in a prepared statement.
