Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Starting with July figures, Tranz Rail Holdings Ltd. plans to release monthly traffic and on-time performance data to follow "the best practice of many publicly listed international rail companies," according to a prepared statement.
Traffic data will refer to revenue-ton kilometers for intermodal, including such service-sensitive moves as import/export containers, and domestic general and distribution business unit freight; and bulk freight, including forest products, coal, milk and fertilizer moves. On-time data will calculate intermodal and bulk train performance.
In July, Tranz Rail increased intermodal revenue-ton kilometers 9.2 percent to 135.5 million compared with 124 million in July 2002. However, bulk freight revenue-ton kilometers dropped 1.4 percent to 153.9 million compared with 156 million last year. Total monthly revenue-ton kilometers rose 3.3 percent to 289.3 million.
The railroad's monthly on-time performance improved to 84 percent compared with 77 percent in July 2002.
During fiscal-year 2003, Tranz Rail increased volume 3.3 percent to a record 14.8 million tons compared with FY2002. The railroad's previous record of 14.7 million tons was set during FY2000.
