Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has completed all but two miles of its $333.8 million Double Track Corridor Improvement Program, Segment 5 Project. So, next week the agency will begin operating additional trains on the line.
Operator of Tri-Rail commuter service, the authority will add 10 weekday and two weekend trains to operate a total of 40, 16 and 14 trains on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, respectively. As SFRTA takes delivery of additional locomotives, coaches and diesel multiple unit trains, the agency eventually will operate 48 weekday trains.
The project calls for double-tracking Tri-Rail’s entire 72-mile corridor to decrease travel time nine minutes between the north end of its system at Mangonia Park and south end at Miami International Airport.
The final phase of the project — double-tracking the New River Bridge — is scheduled to be complete in early 2007.
