Trucks lost market share to intermodal in 2Q, FTR says

Domestic intermodal gained significant market share from trucks in the second quarter, according to transportation industry forecasting firm FTR Associates.
Intermodal's share of U.S. long-haul (550 or more miles) international and domestic container moves edged up 0.1 percent to 12.4 percent compared with first quarter data. But domestic equipment market share increased 0.3 percent to 6.5 percent, according to FTR's monthly intermodal update report.
Intermodal speeds and reliability have reached all-time-high levels, prompting shippers to take advantage of intermodal’s “superior economics,” the report states.
“Although the level of domestic intermodal traffic has declined, the decline has been less severe than truck's,” said FTR Senior Consultant Lawrence Gross in a prepared statement. “Domestic share has been increasing quite steadily since the third quarter of 2007.”
