German firm TÜVRheinland recently acquired Rail Sciences Inc. (RSI) and RSI Materials Engineering, RSI’s testing and metallurgical analysis lab in Omaha, Neb.

Founded in 1987, RSI provides various analytical consulting and materials engineering services, including testing, assessment, certification and training. The firm’s specialties include train and vehicle dynamic studies, computer simulations, derailment investigations, track inspections, rail grinding programs, operational analysis and risk assessment.

“Because of its service portfolio, industry reputation and broad client base in the rail and non-rail fields, RSI is a great strategic fit for TUVRheinland’s Guided Transport Systems business both domestically and internationally,” said Stephan Schmitt, president and chief executive officer of TUV Rheinland North America Holding Inc., in a prepared statement.

TÜVRheinland provides testing, assessment and certification services, and employs more than 13,300 in 61 countries. RSI will become a separate business unit of TUV North America and adopt the new corporate name TUV Rail Sciences Inc.

Becoming part of the TUV Rheinland Group will enable RSI to expand its global footprint and offer clients an extensive portfolio of services, said RSI President and CEO Gary Wolf, who will serve as president of TUV Rail Sciences.

“TUV is active in many industrial sectors and has a large rail consulting group worldwide. The acquisition will now increase TUV’s presence in the North American rail market, he said, adding that TUV’s rail group is “particularly active” in passenger rail, train control systems and certification, rolling stock certification, and independent safety assessments.
