Union Pacific Railroad and CSX Intermodal recently began offering a joint rail/truck trailer service between the eastern and southeastern United States, and Mexico.

Under an expanded "Passport Service," CSXI and UP plan to move 48-foot trailers by rail to UP's intermodal facility in Laredo, Texas, where Union Pacific Carrier Services would truck trailers to customers' doors at more than 100 Mexican destinations.

CSXI plans to handle billing for southbound and northbound traffic through Electronic Data Interchange.

"We now have another reliable and economical solution to long-haul trucking on congested highways to and from Mexico," said Alex Werdenberg, CSXI market manager for Mexico, in a prepared statement.
