Union Pacific Railroad, the Manufacturing Institute and the National Association of Manufacturers this week brought the "Creators Wanted" tour to Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
The initiative aims to inspire a new generation of "creators" by showcasing the variety of careers available in modern manufacturing, according to an article in UP's Inside Track newsletter. Creators Wanted is an immersive, interactive experience in which participants can explore an escape room-style workstation, where they are met with challenges that reflect real manufacturing processes, the newsletter states.
The Manufacturing Institute is a national key partner of UP, and the Twin Cities Creators Wanted tour is an extension of the Class I's "Careers on Track" initiative.
"Manufacturing is the heartbeat of progress. Just as tracks connect cities, manufacturing is the backbone of the rail industry, forging paths to endless possibilities," said Kenny Rocker, UP's executive vice president of marketing and sales said in the newsletter.
The manufacturing industry is facing a significant skills gap, the UP article states. According to a study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, the manufacturing industry will need to fill 4 million jobs by 2030, but as many as 2.1 million of those jobs could be left unfilled.
The railroad co-sponsored a similar event with Dow Chemical in Plaquemine, Louisiana, in April.
