UP, NS add northbound option to Mexican intermodal service

On Feb. 6, Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway announced plans to add northbound service to their joint Mexico intermodal service.
The Class Is will offer expedited service from Mexico City and Laredo, Texas, to UP's Marion, Ark., intermodal facility and NS' Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville and Miami, Fla.; Harrisburg, Pa. and E-Rail (near Elizabeth, N.J.) terminals.
UP and NS plans to provide northbound service seven days a week to Harrisburg and E-Rail, and five days a week to other destinations.
Last summer, the railroads launched expedited southbound service to Mexico — a successful venture that prompted the Class Is to add northbound service, according to a prepared statement.
UP and NS currently offer three intermodal services into and out of Mexico:
• TransBorder, a seamless service that bypasses border customs by clearing customs inside Mexico;
• Passport, under which shipments move by truck from Mexico to Laredo for forwarding by rail to U.S. destinations; and
• Conventional, under which customers arrange transportation of their container from Mexico to Laredo for subsequent rail transportation to U.S. destinations.
