Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Corp. Sept. 24 announced yet another joint Class I intermodal product: a container service between Los Angeles and Atlanta that includes a guaranteed on-time delivery option.

Set to begin Oct. 1, Blue Streak would offer customers three service levels designed to meet a broader range of pricing and transit requirements: standard, premium and superflyer.

Standard service would provide price-sensitive customers access to Blue Streak trains, subject to availability; premium service would offer priority train space, freight monitoring and improved cut-off and availability times; and superflyer service would guarantee "on-time or free" service for loads that don't meet scheduled customer pick-up times, designate 22,000 48- and 53-foot containers from the Equipment Management Program, and provide active shipment monitoring and customer updates.

UP would handle the seamless, double-stack service between Los Angeles and Memphis, Tenn.; NS, between Memphis and Atlanta.

Blue Streak services, including schedules, can be viewed online at www.uprr.com/customers/intermodal/featured/streak.shtml and www.nscorp.com/intermodal.
