UP: Ringing in the holiday season by bringing Christmas trees to California

Thanksgiving arrives on Thursday, but there’s another sign that it’s the holiday season: Union Pacific Railroad has delivered Christmas trees to California.

Last week, the holiday season's first rail shipment of trees from Portland, Ore., arrived in Los Angeles. By Christmas, UP expects to move about 725,00 trees to L.A. and Lathrop in more than 1,000 containers or trailers.

Historically, the railroad moved Christmas trees in box cars that were unloaded at various locations. Since 1988, when UP began moving the trees in containers and trailers, the Class I has delivered more than 9,600 loads and more than 6.5 million trees from the Pacific Northwest.
