UP boosts freight, Amtrak train speeds on southern Texas line

Union Pacific Railroad recently increased freight and Amtrak train speeds on segments of a Houston-to-Nome, Texas, line.

Following Federal Railroad Administration regulations, the Class I gradually increased freight train speed through Ames from 60 mph to 70 mph and Amtrak train speed, from 70 mph to 79 mph. Through Dayton, freight and Amtrak trains went from 40 mph and 60 mph, respectively, to 70 mph each.

UP also made the following changes:
• through Devers, freight trains can go 70 mph instead of 60 mph and Amtrak trains, 79 mph instead of 70 mph;
• through portions of Houston, freight trains can travel 70 mph instead of 40 mph and Amtrak trains, 70 mph instead of 55 mph;
• through Liberty, freight trains can go 70 mph instead of between 30 mph and 60 mph, and Amtrak trains can travel 70 mph instead of between 30 mph and 65 mph; and
• through Nome, freight trains can reach a maximum speed of 70 mph instead of 60 mph and Amtrak trains, a maximum of 79 mph instead of 70 mph.
