UP buys LED lights for blue-flag protection at Nebraska yard

Union Pacific Railroad recently inked a $93,000 contract with Carmanah Technologies Corp. for 350 Model 501 solar-powered light-emitting diode lights, according to a statement prepared July 29.
The railroad plans to use the lights at its North Platte, Neb., yard for blue-flag protection. (Federal Railroad Administration requires railroads to use a blue flag and/or signal when trains are being serviced to indicate that maintenance crews are in the vicinity and a train should remain stationary.)
UP expects at month's end to begin installing Carmanah's permanently mounted LED lights.
