UP commemorates construction of Chicago-area intermodal terminal

Union Pacific Railroad officials May 29 celebrated construction of its $181 million Rochelle, Ill., intermodal facility by driving a three-foot golden spike at the site north of Interstate 88.
UP plans to name the facility Global III, joining intermodal terminals Global I and II that also are located in the Chicago area.
Construction began in November and is scheduled to be completed in July 2003.
Under the project's first phase, UP is developing 750 acres to create a 1,000-container-per-day capacity terminal. The second phase — for which a construction schedule hasn't been determined — would further increase the terminal's capacity and expand the site to more than 1,200 acres.
The Class I has experienced substantial Chicago-area intermodal growth during the past several years, and UP studies showed a need to expand its capacity.
