UP continues to test battery-powered locomotive in California yard
advertisement
On March 12, Union Pacific Railroad and RailPower Technologies Corp. officials plan to meet in Melrose Park, Ill., and publicly discuss the Green Goat™, a hybrid battery-powered locomotive UP's been testing at its Roseville, Calif., yard since February 2002.
The railroad is testing batteries and battery-charging systems as alternate locomotive power sources, as well as evaluating emissions, performance, maintenance requirements and costs.
UP plans to continue testing RailPower's system — which employs a small, onboard diesel-powered generator designed to recharge batteries — through June.
