UP earns ACC's 'responsible care' system certification

Union Pacific Railroad’s safety processes have met certification requirements stipulated by the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) program, according to a recent independent audit.

Adopted by the ACC in 2002, the program sets industry-wide standards in several key safety areas, including community awareness and emergency response, security, employee health and pollution prevention.

The Class I earned “positive feedback” on a number of best practices in the final audit report, such as a hazardous materials and emergency response program with incident response noted as "best seen" by the audit team; strong relationships and coordination with local agencies; environmental stewardship; and a “strong and multi-faceted” security program, UP officials said in a prepared statement.

“This certification is recognition by the chemical industry of the safety efforts and best practices demonstrated by our employees every day across the railroad,” said Bob Grimaila, UP’s vice president of safety, security and environment.
