UP honors chemical shippers' accident-prevention efforts

Union Pacific Railroad recently presented its 14th annual Pinnacle Awards to 59 chemical and petrochemical shippers.
Launched in 1996, the awards recognize companies that successfully prevent accidents, devise chemical transportation safety corrective plans and achieve a rate of zero non-accidental releases for shipments of regulated hazardous materials.
Since 2002, non-accidental haz-mat releases on UP’s network have declined nearly 15 percent, primarily because of increased inspections by the railroad’s haz-mat safety field personnel and Pinnacle Award criteria.
Last year, UP presented Pinnacle Awards to 40 chemical and petrochemical shippers.
