Union Pacific Railroad continues to move goods and supplies to support Gulf Coast recovery efforts, assist more than 250 employees who lived in the area devastated by Hurricane Katrina and match employee cash donations to various service organizations.
The railroad has moved 135 trailers of bottled water, which is distributed by truck to storm victims and response workers. UP also has interchanged several special trains carrying fuel with eastern railroads. The Class I currently is coordinating the movement and staging of 20 refrigerated box cars (which UP is donating) with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
For workers, UP is matching cash donations to the American Red Cross, America’s Second Harvest, Baton Rouge Area Foundation and Salvation Army through Union Pacific's Employee Clubs, which were established to help workers impacted by the hurricane. Employees who are unable to work because of the storm will continue to be paid for at least one month and receive additional financial aid.
“We are committed to helping our employees, and the region, get back on their feet," said UP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dick Davidson in a prepared statement.
UP continues to detour 14 New Orleans gateway trains to Memphis, Tenn., or St. Louis. The railroad currently interchanges four trains daily with Norfolk Southern Railway in Avondale, La. Because NS’ New Orleans buildings are damaged, UP is providing the Class I temporary office space, communication equipment and crew lodging in Avondale.
