UP launches Web tool aimed at attracting recovered paper shippers

Union Pacific Railroad Sept. 18 implemented an e-business tool designed to offer recovered paper shippers faster and easier-to-do-business applications, as well as attract non-traditional rail shippers.

UP Smart Choice — available at www.uprr.com/smartchoice — incorporates new online features and several enhancements to existing applications, including: a simplified price query; easier-to-retrieve shipment information organized in a step-by-step customer workflow; a tool enabling customers to complete an entire shipment transaction electronically; and new online capabilities such as transit times, rail-car availability, customer-oriented equipment characteristics and loading guidelines.

UP in June conducted a UP focus test with customers who ship recovered paper between selected western U.S. points. The Class I received mostly positive customer feedback, prompting the railroad to expand UP Smart Choice to all network locations tied to the recovered paper marketplace.
