Union Pacific Railroad recently launched an $8.8 million track improvement project on a line between Jefferson City and Morrison, Mo.

To be completed by mid-December, the project calls for replacing rail on various curves, removing and installing 67,600 ties, spreading 16,000 tons of ballast and replacing surfaces at 72 grade crossings.

Meanwhile, UP also recently was named one of the nation's top military-friendly employers by G.I. Jobs magazine for the fourth time in the past five years.

The railroad was ranked second out of 50 companies. G.I. Jobs ranks firms based on assets dedicated to military hiring, reserve/guard policies, the percentage of total new hires in the past two years who are military veterans, and veteran recruitment, training and promotional programs.

The magazine ranked BNSF Railway Co. No. 1 on the list. The Class I ranked fourth last year.
