Forbes recently named Union Pacific Railroad one of the nation’s most reputable companies. The Class I landed at No. 42 on the magazine’s list, up from No. 59 last year and the highest ranking among North American railroads in 2009.

Forbes interviewed more than 10,000 people for its U.S. survey, which measured how respondents rated companies in the following categories; financial performance; products and services; innovation; workplace; governance; citizenship; and leadership. The 2009 Forbes Reputation Rankings were compiled by Reputation Institute.

“Our reputation is a direct result of our employees’ dedication to service in all aspects of running the railroad,” said UP Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement.

The list of the top 153 ranked companies also includes BNSF Railway Co. at No. 59.
