Union Pacific Railroad Oct. 2 agreed to purchase and install Nexterna Inc.'s Web-enabled software and wireless communications equipment on 2,870 of the railroad's locomotives.
UP plans to use Nexterna's OptiTrac™ and OptiPath™ systems to improve locomotive use, real-time asset-location tracking, work-order status and two-way data communications.
Nexterna will mount computers with universal platforms and connectors onto the locomotives, including wireless communication devices.
"The improved accuracy of location monitoring furnished by the Global Positioning System enables us to improve service to our customers," said Mike Connolly, UP assistant vice president of network operations, in a prepared statement.
Nexterna is a division of UP Corp.-owned Fenix Enterprises.
