On June 15, Union Pacific Railroad set a record for carloadings in a seven-day period at 200,700 units — the first time the railroad established a high-water mark outside of the fall peak season. UP’s previous seven-day record of 198,416 carloadings was set on Nov. 23, 2005.

“Reaching this record level in June … is an indication of the improving efficiency of our railroad and the strength of demand for our services,” said UP President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement. “Especially encouraging is the fact that we handled this record volume with improved velocity and reduced terminal dwell compared to last November.”

Through June’s first 10 days, second quarter traffic volume was up 5 percent compared with the same 2005 period. Energy volume was up 8 percent; intermodal volume, 7 percent; automotive volume, 5 percent; and agricultural products volume, 3 percent. Chemical traffic was flat and industrial products volume was lagging behind a strong pace set in the first quarter, UP said.
