Union Pacific Railroad recently received the Health Project’s 2005 C. Everett Koop National Health Award, which recognizes the Class I’s health care programs. A four-time recipient, UP is the only railroad to receive the non-profit health awareness organization’s award.

The railroad’s programs include a report card that provides managers metrics to gauge health improvement efforts; intervention initiatives to reduce workplace accidents and improve employees’ health; regular health screenings and fairs; and onsite occupational health nurses.

This year, UP began offering a consumer-driven health plan (CDHP) that provides financial incentives if a manager is a non-smoker and completes a wellness assessment.

“We know that supporting our employees and their families in their efforts to stay healthy is a win-win – that’s why we’ve put together an extensive program of health and wellness initiatives across our system,” said UP Senior Vice President of Human Resources Barb Schaefer in a prepared statement.
