Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

UP to accelerate trains through Louisiana town

Union Pacific Railroad June 25 announced plans to increase train speeds to 60 mph through Vinton, La., beginning July 1.
UP trains, which currently operate at 40 mph, would increase speeds 5 mph per week for four straight weeks to reach the new speed limit.
Trains have been restricted to 40 mph due to operational and track constraints, but UP-compiled data reveals that 87 percent of all highway/rail grade crossing collisions occur when trains travel at speeds less than 50 mph.
The railroad plans to continue raising train speeds in various communities after modifying grade crossings and installing signals.
