Union Pacific Railroad continues to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade track across its network. Yesterday, the Class I announced it will spend more than $23 million to improve lines in Kansas, Missouri and Wisconsin.

By early September, crews are on track to complete a more than $11 million project on a 23-mile stretch of track between Jefferson City and Wooldridge, Mo. They'll remove and install new rail, and replace surfaces at 17 grade crossings.

Also by next month, UP officials expect to wrap up a more than $10 million projects on a 21-mile line between Kansas City and Linwood, Kan. Work calls for removing and installing new rail, replacing seven switches and renewing surfaces at 27 crossings.

And by mid-August, crews will complete a more than $2 million project on a 20-mile stretch of track between Merrillan and Millston, Wis. Workers will remove and install 15,000 ties, spread more than 8,300 tons of ballast and replace surfaces at 18 crossings.

The three maintenance-of-way projects are part of UP’s $2.6 billion capital spending budget for 2010.
