Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend $6.7 million to upgrade lines in Colorado and Iowa.
By mid-June, the Class I expects to complete a $5.5 million project on a line between Missouri Valley and Onawa, Iowa. Crews will remove and install about 48,000 ties, spread more than 16,500 tons of ballast and renew roadway surfaces at 42 grade crossings. Tie replacement is scheduled to wrap up by May 1.
UP also will spend about $1.2 million to improve a line between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs, Colo. To be completed by mid-August, the project calls for removing and installing more than one mile of rail in various curves, and replacing more than 15,000 ties between Spruce and Monument, Colo. The railroad expects to complete tie replacement work by April 19.
The projects are part of UP’s $2.5 billion capital expenditure budget in 2010.
