UP to donate unused rail bridge to Oregon city

advertisement

On Friday, Union Pacific Railroad announced it's donating a former rail bridge over the Willamette River to the city of Salem, Ore. The railroad will establish a fund to pay for bridge maintenance during the next four years.

UP also will donate land to the city to build a park and trail adjacent to the bridge.

In the early 1970s, UP predecessor Southern Pacific Railroad stopped using the bridge. Since that time, many recreational uses have been proposed for the structure.
