UP to improve Missouri line

Union Pacific Railroad will spend more than $15 million to upgrade a line between St. Louis and Poplar Bluff, Mo.

To be completed by July's end, the project calls for removing and installing 90,000 ties, spreading 28,000 tons of rock ballast, and renewing road surfaces at 60 grade crossings and nearly three miles of rail in various curves. Crews recently completed crossing surface work, and currently are replacing ties and rail in curves.

Last year, UP invested more than $100 million on capital projects in Missouri. In 2009, the Class I plans to spend $1.7 billion on infrastructure improvements systemwide.
