Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend $5 million to improve a line between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Fremont, Neb. Work on the line, which totals more than 33 miles, began May 26 and is scheduled to conclude at July’s end.

The project calls for removing and installing more than 25,000 ties, spreading about 20,000 tons of rock ballast and replacing 35 grade crossing surfaces.

The project is part of UP’s $2.6 billion capital spending program in 2010. Last month, the Class I boosted this year’s capex budget by $100 million.
