Union Pacific Railroad and LaBarge Inc. recently reached a $1 million agreement, under which UP between now and March 2003 would install LaBarge's CellularRTU™ remote-monitoring devices at 750 new and upgraded crossings.


LaBarge already has begun shipping CellularRTU units to UP, which plans to enhance its ScadaNET Network™ at various crossings.


ScadaNET Network is designed to enable signal engineers and field
maintenance staff to detect and quickly respond to equipment
problems, and address them before they affect signal operations.


The system notifies personnel via Internet, e-mail, pager, fax or direct data link to UP's dispatch center.


"ScadaNET Network has consistently proven it is a reliable and cost effective remote-monitoring solution for the rail industry," said Phil Abaray, UP chief engineer, signals, in a statement prepared June 27.


LaBarge recently delivered to UP more than 1,000 CellularRTUs for the railroad's Illinois crossing-retrofit program.


More than 40 railroads currently use LaBarge's ScadaNET Network, including Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Illinois Central Railroad, I&M Rail Link, Montana Rail Link, Canadian National Railway Co.'s Wisconsin Central Division, and Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Co.
