Union Pacific Railroad is opening a new intermodal terminal while Norfolk Southern Railway is just getting one started.
Today, UP will hold a grand opening ceremony for its 785-acre, $370 million Joliet Intermodal Terminal. Ranking as the Class I’s second-largest intermodal terminal, the Joliet, Ill., facility will help support the railroad’s growing distribution and warehousing needs, UP officials said in a ribbon-cutting ceremony announcement.
Meanwhile, NS will hold a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow for a $94 million intermodal terminal near Greencastle, Pa. The 200-acre hub is expected to open in 2012.
The terminal is part of NS’ Crescent Corridor, a 2,500-mile intermodal route between New Jersey and Louisiana designed to accommodate double-stack trains.
