UP to serve Green Plains' second ethanol plant in Iowa

Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc. has locked up a site and lined up a railroad for its second ethanol plant in Iowa. The company recently purchased 68 acres in Superior and reached an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to serve the 50 million-gallon plant.

However, UP officials want to review final rail design plans to ensure the track meets the railroad’s engineering and operating design standards.

Green Plains — which operates an ethanol plant in Shenandoah, Iowa — plans to build a fuel-grade ethanol plant in Superior. The company has applied to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for an air permit, which is required before construction can begin.
