Next month, Union Pacific Railroad plans to increase train speed in and around a Louisiana and Texas town.

Trains now moving through Beaumont, Texas, at 40 mph will increase speed to 60 mph. UP will boost velocity five mph a week until trains reach the new speed limit March 13.

Train speed through Sulphur, La., will increase from 35 mph to 60 mph. UP will boost velocity five mph a week until trains reach the new speed limit March 20. The Class I also will enable passenger trains to increase speed five mph weekly until they reach a new 70 mph limit April 3.

UP recently improved track running through the towns to accommodate higher train speeds. During the past few years, the railroad has increased train speeds in a number of communities after upgrading track and modifying grade-crossing signals.
