On Jan. 17, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it reached an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to extend the demonstration trial of the Green Goat™ hybrid locomotive to June 30, 2003.
UP plans to test the locomotive at its Proviso switch yards in Chicago. Since March 2002, the railroad has been testing a Green Goat at its Roseville switch yards near Sacramento, Calif.
RailPower Technologies plans to add instruments to a Green Goat for the Chicago trial to confirm prior test data, which showed the locomotive offers a minimum of 30 percent fuel savings, and 80 percent to 90 percent reductions in NOx and particulate emissions compared with other locomotives, the company said in a prepared statement.
