The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently recognized Union Pacific Corp's "Union Center" headquarters in Omaha, Neb., as one of the nation's most energy-efficient buildings.

The DOE presented UP an Energy Innovators Award, which recognizes businesses, individuals and governmental agencies that successfully develop or deploy energy-efficient and renewable technologies, services or policies.

The 19-story Union Center features a naturally-lit atrium, under-floor cooling system, computerized energy management system and ventilation system that automatically adjusts fresh air according to the number of people in the building.

Meanwhile, UP announced plans to increase train speed from 10 mph to 40 mph in part of Salt Lake City, Utah. The railroad recently improved and realigned track, and upgraded crossings to permit higher operating speeds.
