Three weeks into August, Union Pacific Railroad was on pace to load 1,046 trains in the southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) for the month vs. 1,190 trains loaded in August 2008.

Through Aug. 23, the Class I recorded 60 missed SPRB loading opportunities, 21 of which were attributable to mines, 37 to utility plants and two to UP. The missed loadings were offset by 75 extra loadings, the railroad said in its weekly coal loading performance report.

In the Colorado/Utah region, UP was on pace to load 248 trains in August vs. 322 trains in August 2008.

The Class I expects to meet total National Coal Transportation Association demand this month in both the SPRB and Colorado/Utah region.
