With only the last day of the month left out of its tabulations, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 1,031 trains in the Powder River Basin (PRB) in August vs. 1,190 trains in August 2008.

The Class I recorded 86 missed PRB loading opportunities, 22 of which were attributable to mines, 59 to utility plants and five to UP. Missed loading opportunities were offset with 94 extra loadings, the railroad said in its weekly coal loading performance report.

In the Colorado/Utah region through Aug. 30, UP loaded 251 coal trains compared with 322 trains in August 2008. Loadings from some mines continued to be depressed because of coal production problems and lower demand from several plants, UP said.

The railroad expected its August loadings in both regions to exceed National Coal Transportation Association demand.
