UP's fourth 'Heritage Series' locomotive honors Chicago & North Western's workers

Union Pacific Railroad has unveiled the fourth locomotive to feature a paint scheme and graphics that pay tribute to the Class I’s history. On Saturday, UP introduced the Chicago & North Western (C&NW) “Heritage Series” locomotive, which features colors and graphics designed to honor the predecessor railroad’s workers.

A key link between Chicago and the West, the C&NW served Chicago commuters, Michigan iron mines and Illinois coal fields. In 1867, C&NW became the first railroad to connect with UP at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The two railroads merged in 1995.

Since launching the Heritage Series last year, UP has introduced Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives in July 2005, a Katy locomotive in September 2005 and a Denver & Rio Grande locomotive in June 2006. Next month, UP plans to unveil a Southern Pacific locomotive — the last in the series.
