U.S., Canada partner on grade-crossing research to improve safety

Transport Canada’s Transportation Development Centre (TDC) and Federal Railroad Administration May 13 signed a memorandum of cooperation, agreeing to exchange grade-crossing research data for three years.
TDC and FRA plan to share ongoing and intended research to minimize duplication. However, each organization will develop and fund projects in its areas of concern and for all aspects of its own research, including overall design, management and performance.
TDC since 1999 has been conducting a grade-crossing research program as part of Direction 2006, a 10-year, national initiative aimed at halving grade crossing collisions and railway trespassing incidents by 2006. The research program is designed to identify factors contributing to collisions and trespassing incidents, and to improve countermeasures.
"By working together, we’ll be able to improve the safety and cost-effectiveness of grade crossing systems through technological, operational and human-factor research," said Transport Minister David Collenette in a prepared statement.
