U.S. railroads originated more containers the week of June 16 than in any previous week on record, according to an Association of American Railroads statement released June 27.


Railroads loaded 142,455 containers the week ended June 22, breaking a two-week old record of 141,144 containers set the week ended June 8.


And the week of June 16, intermodal volume of 191,016 trailers and containers rose, too — 9.5 percent compared with a similar 2001 period.


During 2002's first 25 weeks, U.S. roads totaled 4,364,864 trailers and containers, a 4 percent intermodal-volume increase.


Meanwhile, Canadian roads also increased intermodal traffic: The week ended June 22, railroads moved 39,084 trailers and containers (rising 8.6 percent), and for 2002's first 25 weeks, 924,024 trailers and containers (up 6.7 percent) compared with similar 2001 periods.
