U.S., China agree to jointly improve hazardous materials transportation

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and China Minister of Transport Li Shenglin recently signed an agreement to jointly ensure safe hazardous materials transportation via rail, highway, sea and air.

The U.S.–China Cooperative Project Arrangement on the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods calls for the countries to: develop and strengthen avenues of communication; exchange and jointly develop technical information; implement international regulations developed by international forums; cooperate on enforcement and investigative actions; and organize training activities.

Both nations’ industries — including manufacturing, agriculture and medical research — need regular access to certain types of hazardous materials to conduct business, Hood said in a prepared statement.

“Chinese businesses ship billions of dollars worth of trade goods around the world each year, including to the United States,” he said. “We are eager to work together to make sure these items are transported safely.”
