Class Is employed 122,464 people in mid-September, a 0.27% decrease from August’s level but a 4.15% increase from September 2022’s count, according to Surface Transportation Board data.
Only two of six employment categories registered increases between August and September. They were transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.84% to 4,920 employees; and executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.05% to 8,236.
Categories that registered month-to-month decreases were maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.7% to 18,131 employees; maintenance of way and structures, down 0.34% to 28,894; professional and administrative, down 0.31% to 10,295; and transportation (train and engine), down 0.22% to 51,988.
Year over year, all categories logged increases: transportation (train and engine), 5.72%; professionals and administrative, 4.94%; transportation (other than train and engine), 4.28%; executives, officials and staff assistants, 4%; maintenance of equipment and stores, 3.28%; and maintenance of way and structures, 1.72%.
