U.S. Rail seeks STB approval to lease, operate Indiana lines

U.S. Rail Corp. has filed for an exemption from the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to lease and operate Indiana lines owned by Winamac Southern Railway Co. and Kokomo Grain Co. Inc.
Totaling 60.9 miles, the lines run through Bringhurst, Logansport, Kokomo, Amboy, Marion and Michaelsville. The lines currently are operated by the Central Railroad of Indianapolis (CERA) under a lease set to expire on Dec. 31, according to the STB filing.
U.S. Rail reached an agreement with Winamac Southern and Kokomo Grain to begin operating the lines on Jan. 1. U.S. Rail also would obtain trackage rights to a 3.3-mile Topeka, Peoria & Western Railway Corp. (TPW) line in Logansport.
U.S. Rail would interchange with Norfolk Southern Railway in Logansport and Clymers; with TPW in Logansport; and with CERA in Michaelsville and Kokomo.
A Toledo, Ohio-based short line, U.S. Rail currently operates a line near Chillicothe, Ohio, that intersects with NS and CSX Transportation, and a line in Hamilton, Ohio, that intersects with CSXT.
