U.S. railroads continued to distance themselves from the West Coast port shutdown's aftereffects by increasing container volume 7.3 percent during the week ended Nov. 16. The roads moved 190,538 trailers and containers, up 5.4 percent compared with the same 2001 week, according to Association of American Railroads data released Nov. 21.


Through the year's first 46 weeks, U.S. roads moved 8,303,820 trailers and containers, a 4.1 percent increase compared with the same 2001 period.


However, carloadings during the same span still trail last year's pace, dipping 1 percent to 15,241,912 carloads.


Canadian railroads also increased their intermodal volume (19.2 percent) during the week ended Nov. 16, moving 43,393 trailers and containers.


Through 46 weeks, the roads moved 1,788,022 trailers and containers, a 10.5 percent increase.


But Canadian roads also are moving fewer carloads. Their 2,752,572 carloadings through 46 weeks trail last year's total by 2.7 percent.


On a combined cumulative-volume basis through 46 weeks, 16 reporting U.S. and Canadian roads moved 10,091,842 trailers and containers, a 5.1 percent rise, and 17,994,484 carloads, a 1.3 percent drop compared with last year.
