It didn’t take U.S. railroads long to set another weekly traffic-volume record. During the week ending July 30, the roads’ volume totaled 33.8 ton-miles, breaking the previous record of 33.3 ton-miles set the week ending April 16, according to the Association of American Railroads.

The roads also moved an all-time-high 177,110 containers, breaking the record of 176,405 containers set the previous week. Total intermodal volume of 234,358 trailers and containers represented the fourth-highest week on record.

Ton-miles and intermodal volume are on track to break annual records set last year, AAR officials said. During the year’s first 30 weeks, ton-miles and intermodal volume rose 2.3 percent and 6.0 percent, respectively, compared with the same 2004 period.
